The conversations between the Kansas City Chiefs and wide receiver Tyreek Hill regarding a contract extension have taken an abrupt turn.
Extension talks between the Chiefs and Hill have stalled, and Kansas City has given Hill permission to seek a trade, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

The New York Jets and Miami Dolphins have trades in place for Hill, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
“The question now becomes where Hill wants to become the highest-paid WR in NFL history. Once he decides, the trade is expected to happen; for now, Hill is said to be ‘torn’,” Schefter wrote.
Kansas City is seeking a first-round pick and a second-round pick in exchange for Hill, per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
On March 12, Hill posted a tweet — which at the time didn’t seem cryptic — that read “we came a long way thank you chiefs kingdom I’m forever indebted.” At that time an extension between Hill and Kansas City seemed likely, as he was on the books with a $21.8 million cap hit in 2022, per Over The Cap, which is also the last year of his contract. So, Hill’s tweet read more as a thank you to the organization for keeping him around even longer.
On March 16, Rapoport reported that Hill and the Chiefs were “deep in talks” regarding a contract extension that could pay the veteran wideout upwards of $20 million per season on a “shorter deal”.
However, those talks apparently never led to a deal that both parties could agree to.
Dolphins Front Office Linked to Chiefs, Hill
The reason that Miami could be one of the front-runners to acquire Hill via trade could have to do with assistant general manager Marvin Allen. Allen was the director of college scouting from 2013-17 in Kansas City, which is the same timeframe in which the Chiefs drafted Hill (’16). The Dolphins also have two first-round picks in 2023, with the extra pick coming from the trade that helped the San Francisco 49ers move up in the 2021 NFL Draft so they could select quarterback Trey Lance.
New York is another front-runner likely because of the draft capital they have available, which includes the No. 4 and No. 10 overall picks in the 2022 draft, and four of the top 38 picks in the draft (No. 35 and No. 38). The team likely wants to continue surrounding second-year quarterback Zach Wilson with talented pass-catching options, and Hill fits that mold.
Since being selected as fifth-round pick by the Chiefs, Hill has been a six-time Pro Bowler, three-time All-Pro, and has had four 1,000-yard seasons. Overall, he has accumulated 479 receptions, 6,630 yards, and 56 touchdowns during his six-year career, according to Pro Football Reference.
If Hill were to be traded, Kansas City’s depth chart at wide receiver would include JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mecole Hardman, Josh Gordon, Daurice Fountain, Gehrig Dieter, Cornell Powell, Justin Watson, Chris Finke, Gary Jennings, Matthew Sexton, and Omar Bayless.
Chiefs Players React to Hill News
Several Chiefs players along with other Twitter users reacted to the news of a potential Hill trade.
“@cheetah Finna be in yo front yard like this wit da boom box on my head bruh chillllll,” Khalen Saunders wrote.
“Lol need some backup dancers??” Clyde Edwards-Helaire said in response to Saunders’ tweet.
“Tyreek Hill lives in Miami during the offseason. Just throwing that out there. It only matters when it matters,” Matt Miller of ESPN wrote.
“It’s going to really really break my heart if the Chiefs trade Tyreek Hill, but the truth is, it may be what’s best for the future of the franchise. They’d have to absolutely hit home runs on whatever draft picks they get back, but man this is a tough pill to swallow,” Arrowhead Live wrote.
